Celebrating Art and Community: Kenwyn House Gallery's Inaugural Amateur Painting Competition

The Kenwyn House Gallery was filled with anticipation and excitement, on Monday 15th April as art enthusiasts gathered for the much-anticipated prize-giving ceremony of the inaugural Amateur Painting Competition. The event marked a celebration of art and community, drawing attention to the transformative power of creativity on World Art Day.

Speaking on behalf of Gran Kaz, the PR and Communications Manager, Shama Amesbury said

“It is an honour to stand before the audience and witness the incredible talent showcased in the submitted paintings. World Art Day, serves as a poignant reminder of art's significance in fostering dialogue and understanding across cultures.”

Throughout the evening, participants and attendees alike celebrated the diversity of artistic expression and the profound impact of art on individuals and communities. The Kenwyn House Arts and Literature Project, through initiatives like the Poetry Competition, Photography Competition, and now the Painting Competition, has exemplified how art can inspire, provoke thought, and unite people from all walks of life.

                                       Paradise of Colour - Winning painting in the Young Palettes Category (ages 10-15)

 

A heartfelt gratitude was extended to all participants who answered the call for submissions, regardless of age or experience level. Their passion, dedication, and artistic vision enriched the community and served as an inspiration to all present.

Cultural Oasis - Winning painting in the Teenage Brustrokes Category (ages 16-20)

 

The esteemed panel of established artists – consisting of Nigel Henri, James Agricole, and Frances Chang-Him - who diligently adjudicated the competition, was recognized for their expertise and discernment. Their contributions ensured that the winners truly deserved their accolades, adding to the success and credibility of the event.

 

In reflecting on the exceptional quality of the paintings showcased during the competition, Frances Chang Him shared,

 

"I was very impressed with the quality of the paintings. The artists expressed themselves in very different ways, and it was so inspiring and a pleasure to view such works."

Flowers never pick themselves - Winning Painting in the Seasoned Canvases Category (ages 21+)

 

This sentiment echoed the sentiments of many attendees, underscoring the diverse and inspiring nature of the artistic expressions on display.

 

As the evening reached its climax, attendees eagerly awaited the announcement of the winners across three categories: Young Palettes, Teenage Brushstrokes, and Seasoned Canvases. Each winner was celebrated for their unique contribution to the world of art and their ability to capture the imagination and touch hearts with their brushstrokes of brilliance.

 

In the Young Palettes category, Adrian Marie's piece "The Air of Garden" clinched the People's Choice Award.

“A Natural Feel”, by Elise Govinden took the runner-up spot, while Helina Bhugawoo's "Paradise of Colour" emerged victorious with the highest score from the esteemed judges.

In the Teenage Brushstrokes category, Elisha Barbe, who unfortunately couldn't be there in person to collect her reward, was runner-up with her piece, entitled “Motion”.

 

Joshua Nourrice's "Cultural Oasis" swept both the People's Choice and Judges' Choice awards, showcasing exceptional talent and creativity.

Finally, in the Seasoned Canvases category, Jonnes Knowles’ “Through My Eyes” earned him the runner-up spot.

Abraham Brioche's "Flowers Never Pick Themselves" captured the hearts of the audience, earning both the People's Choice Award and the top honour from the judges.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees left the Kenwyn House Gallery inspired by the remarkable talent on display and the unifying power of art. The inaugural Painting Competition not only celebrated individual artists but also highlighted the importance of art in fostering connection and understanding within the community.
