Lunch for Elderly
Gran Kaz treats Senior Citizens to a special lunch
Gran Kaz offered the senior citizens of English River home for the Elderly to a special lunch on Friday 1st October to commemorate the International Day for the Elderly.
The residents of the home, who had had an eventful day of activities organised for them the previous day to also celebrate the 20th year of existence of the English River Home for the Elderly, were treated to a lunch created especially for them by the chefs at Gran Kaz.
“As chef’s we love to feed people, and for this particular group we wanted to create something outside of our usual menu – we opted for some traditional creole dishes that we were sure they would love – tender mouth-watering octopus curry, delicious roasts and of course you can’t do a creole meal without grilled fish, and we finished it off with a rich creamy ‘ladob’ for desert” Says Chef Arnold of Gran Kaz.
Shama Amesbury, PR and Communications Manager at Gran Kaz tells us that this is yet another aspect of their community outreach programmes, focusing on the different ways that they can get into the community and give back:
“The Elderly are a treasured window to the past, we can learn so much from them – stories of how they grew up, what our country was like when they were young, little insights into our history and culture. They should be celebrated, and we could think of no better way than to offer them this.”
The Home which has been around for 20 years has seen many residents come through its doors, some for longer stays than others, each one beloved by the staff and management.
“Each and every resident we have had has been memorable to us. Not everyone has family who can take care of them after a certain age, some never married or had children of their own, so they literally have no one, others have very specific needs that have to be tended to by professionals - the home for the elderly provides them with all of this, and we are always grateful to companies like Gran Kaz who step up when we need assistance, be it for essential needs, or for celebrating the people who live here.” Says Celine Baccus, Home Administrator.
The lunch and the previous day’s activities were hugely appreciated by the Home’s occupants, who have been missing some of the activities and freedom that they had pre-covid.
“COVID has brought with it a number of challenges,” says Mrs Baccus, “with their loved ones not being allowed to visit, and us not being able to do some of our usual outings and activities, the residents have been feeling very low, but yesterday and today we saw them perk up completely – it’s so nice to see them enjoying themselves and looking so happy.”
The English River Home for the Elderly has 10 rooms, with currently 9 occupied, and a further four rooms just completed and expected to be occupied by December.
